Working Girls - Tart Cards II

Lets take another peep inside the book about the London Working Girls "Tart Cards"

Sex sells! But ironically sex is the one word that the tart cards never used. Euphemism, double entendres, catch phrases, rhymes and a specialised vocabulary are all drawn on to retail that most basic human instinct

Some of the girls had to improvise and hand write their cards. These were often small, cheap and cheerful, straight to the point and very attractive to some men.

Later many of the girls increased the size of their cards added pictures and colour. They had to make them captivating and memorable in order to catch a clients attention which was particularly important when other girls were offering the same product.

Cruel Dominatrix Ladies
(Click picture to enlarge)

Second only to corporal punishment. A true dominatrix dressed in the latest latex with 4" stiletto boots and wielding a whip is not a prostitute and woe betide any of the clients who thinks otherwise.

More soon.

Have a great weekend.

London Working Girls - Tart Cards

Come and join me and we'll take another peek into my Working Girl's Tart Book.

Because all tart cards essentially retail the same product, many of the girls had to become inventive and persuasive with their vocabulary in order to sell their wares.

So the girls had to add a little humour and wit and you would frequently find expression in brief lines of poetry from chirpy rhyming couplets:

New number new place
Ring me now for the place!

If you're feeling rather randy
Always keep this number handy!

Or enticing invitations

Often girls would parody the phrase of popular adverts such as this re-working of a Heineken beer ad.

Our simple two liners. I like this one:)

Or the more menacing doggerels

Plain blank verse adaptations

Or just straight to the point

You can view more here.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Working Girls - Tart Cards

Remember me posting some of the working girl cards that they used to put in the London red telephone boxes advertising their different services, well now I've found an authoritative book on the subject. I was out shopping recently and spotted "Tart Cards" as per the below cover. I think the title says it all.

The book is well written amusing and informative of London's darker side. It's packed with tart cards, some from around 25 years ago.

"Printed cards in telephone boxes appeared in London during the 1980's when a loophole in the law meant they were not, strictly speaking, illegal". "The practice of placing cards was known as carding. It is a particularly English phenomenon specific to London and seaside resort around Brighton and Hove. For the printers who were prepared to take the risk they represented a very regular and lucrative business."

Here's a few photos from the book. It also has an amusing glossary of technical terms and vernacular phrases that are often found on the London tart cards.

Map of the London Underground, the tube stop names have been changed to reflect the services of the London working girls.

Love or hate them, I would have to say the tart cards are definitely a part of London's history.

Working Girls II

P was telling me the other day that one of our clients has just acquired one of those old British red telephone boxes to put in his new restaurant, I don't know if he's going to put a phone it or if it's just decor. Not sure where he got it but there aren't many around in public use these days, I reckon they'll become collectors items if not already.

It reminded me of an old post on working girls advertising their varied services in the telephone boxes in London, they used to stick their business cards in the booths.

Here's another selection of their 'business cards'

Wonder where they advertise now.

Olympic Pole Dancers

I thought it was a joke when I saw the headline last weekend, I can't remember what media source it came from but surely someone else would have seen it? It's true anyway, a real possibility that pole dancing could become an Olympic discipline within the next five years so get training, girls, and if you can't get sponsorship early days you can make good money on the side in the sleazy boys clubs.

I would never have thought it years ago when I first learned about pole dancing after P had visited Spearmint Rhino near the Chinese Quarter in Birmingham, he went with a bunch of clients and a couple of colleagues from his own industry, they shared the cost. He'd only told me they were going for a meal and then probably onto a late bar or casino but next day he told me where they'd ended up. It got me spanked too because I went on a bit about it calling the girls near enough prostitutes and the clubs fronting brothels (very wrong of me on both accounts) but P wouldn't hear of it although he did admit they were working girls in fact he said they worked bloody hard. I played my face a bit in spite of P saying not to be so silly and at lunchtime he took me home and spanked me. We were working closely together in the same office at that time so the atmosphere had been a bit frictional in the morning and I'd been taking calls slowly and acting belligerently when I put them across to him, well those that belonged to him. But it was certainly a lot better in the afternoon! Amazing what a well smacked bottom can do for a girl's demeanour.

Anyway I knew most of the blokes who'd been on the outing and I couldn't help over the next few days winding him up, when any of them called the office, pressing mute and saying 'It's that creepy so-and-so, do you want to take it?'  or, 'P can you take this pervert off me please, it's you-know-who' and that sort of stuff until he told me to stop being so childish or he'd take a cane to my backside. And make me go with him to Spearmint Rhino for good measure, just to show me what it was like. It never happened, nor the caning on that occasion, I grew up:)

Have a fun weekend.

Christmas Tart Cards

I'm doing some voluntary work for the week and wont have a lot of time to write, so hope you don't mind if I do some re-posts.

Some of you may remember me posting about Tart cards  in London telephone boxes by the working girls advertising their different type of services during the 1980's when a loophole in the law meant they were not, strictly speaking, illegal.

As Christmas was a busy one for the girls they tried to bring as much humour and wit to their Christmas working cards with distinctive illustrations and text in order to entice their clients. They have to be inventive and persuasive with their vocabulary in order to sell their wares. Such as 'Treat yourself to some Kinky Kristmas Kapers' or visit a 'Stunning Christmas cracker waiting to be pulled'

Here are some of the Christmas theme cards, a bit tenuous with some of them

"The images that accompany the slogans and the many hand drawn cards with holly, ivy or a cracker adds to the allure and charm of these particular Christmas working cards". Equally festive words play a part.

as this parody nursery rhyme shows - Sing-a-song-of-sixpence:

Sing a song of Christmas.
a grotto full of toys,
Lots of canes, whips and chains,
for all you naughty boys.
Or

this playful rhyme :-
Christmas cracker needs some fun!Come along and spank her bum

Some preferred word-play and one liners - 'Good Queen Wence-lust, with the 42" bust'.

'Red hot Xmas cracker' Let me play with your Jingle bells'

Hope you enjoyed them.

Stay safe.

Christmas Tart Cards

Didn't know what to share with you today - no weekend spanking story to relate so here's a post of some pictures from a book I found a few years back called 'Tart Cards'.

Some of you may remember the book and pictures I shared. For my new readers - Tart cards were often printed cards (though some of the early ones were handwritten/drawn) and placed in London telephone boxes by the working girls advertising their different type of services during the 1980's when a loophole in the law meant they were not, strictly speaking, illegal.

The practice of placing cards was known as carding. It is a particularly English phenomenon specific to London and seaside resort around Brighton and Hove (though they did appear in other towns) For the printers who were prepared to take the risk they represented a very regular and lucrative business.

Have a good week.

Bankers starved of sex

I'm not a banker basher honest, although my husband puts them in the same category as lawyers, but a small article in the Sunday Times amused me.

Spain is in a bit of an economic mess as is well publicised, so it's nice to hear that the high class 'working girls' (prostitutes)

are trying to do their bit to help the economy by refusing to have sex with bankers until there is clear evidence that they are mending their ways and start making credit available again to families and small business instead of hogging all the EU handouts to themselves.

According to one of the striking prostitutes in Madrid, some sneaky bankers are trying to get round the ban by pretending to be architects or engineers but the girls aren't being fooled. They apparently know a banker when they see one.

Another of the girls told the Times that "it had been many years since these professionals could afford rates that start at 300 euros per hour".

Bloody hell, 300 euros an hour! I'm in the wrong business:)

Pert Bottoms in the Saddle

Sunday morning woke late, it was almost 8am, warm and comfy, no probs sleeping in a strange bed.

Last night had been great fun playing Wii games most of the night with P's mom and family who we were staying with. I'd been a tad overly chirpy apparently, induced by wine according to P, dancing around mildy provocatively, pushing my best feature (he says) in P's direction while playing tennis, even my golf swings caused me to practically fall into his lap. We'd all gone to bed tired, happy, perhaps a bit tidily, I'd flopped under the duvet naked, usually I wear knickers or sometimes pj's if it's really cold.

Its late said P, they'll all be up before us, but I couldn't hear any activity going on. You showering first? he asked. Nnnnn.. I snuggled closer to him, I know what I'd like to do. No chance of that, he said, too much noise and besides you were a naughty girl last night, as his hand brushed against my thigh and lingered as he realised I was naked. Naughty girls get spanked, but that's too noisy as well, his hand caressing its way across the front of my thigh, tickly, slow, sensitive. I ought to be giving you a taste of what someone should have have given those two girls yesterday afternoon, they were decidedly naughty too. What on earth...? I asked wondering where he was going but happy to indulge him as long as his hand kept working away. You remember, the two riders who held us and several other cars in a queue for at least 10 minutes on the lanes.

(I did remember, they were riding two abreast which was quite ridiculous, then when they got into single file they weren't controlling their ponies properly, then they ignored a couple of pull-ins where they could easily have took a break and let some traffic pass....we'd had to put up with their pert bottoms jiggling along in time with their ponies well groomed flanks for almost a mile. Arrogant backsides, which would benefit from a taste of their own riding crops, P had said at the time).

Oh those two girls, I said, and would you be meting out this taste of the riding crop by any chance? You can be sure of it, said P, I'd have them return to their stables, unsaddle and rub down their ponies, then have each one in turn sit on one of the saddles and bend right forward as far as they could stretching their jodhpurs tight across their bums.......his hand's working its way between my legs now..... And I'd teach them some road manners. Ooh and how exactly would you do that? ....his hand has discovered my wetness now.........I'd bring the crop down across their bottoms. Hard............his fingers are kneading my mound........How hard? I enquire with indecent interest......... Hard enough to teach the naughty madams to be more respectful......I didn't hear any more because his head went under the duvet and his mouth took over from his fingers, and I started coming and bunched the pillow into my mouth to muffle my cry........I came, it was unexpected, it felt naughty and it was delicious.

Then we definitely did hear noises people moving about, P went for a shower. I lay a few minutes longer, thinking about those naughty riders and wondering impossibly if we had room for a pony.

Driving back home in the afternoon sunshine the lanes were uncluttered, perhaps someone had taken those two girls to hand after all, I mused.

It was a lovely weekend.

Working Girls

So what's this got to do with telephone boxes you ask?Well it was taken from one of those lovely old British red telephone boxes, along with lots of other buisness cards from girls advertising various.. er.. stress relief services.

The phone boxes are almost non existent these days, being replaced with modern plastic bubbles and mobiles of course, but I found an article which showed loads of different cards which had been taken from the old boxes, I just chose a few of them.

Apparently contact cleaning staff and repair men used to turn a blind eye to the cards, which were taped or blu-tacked to the wooden board which the payphone was mounted on.

Here's a selection of them below:-

I couldn't help thinking what would I put on my card if I was so minded as to want to place one and I came up with this, with the help of photo-ed.

I showed the card I made to P, he laughed. ''They're supposed to pay you, not you pay them,'' he said.

Oh dear, I wouldn't make much money. But then there's the job satisfaction............

Tart Cards

While I was sorting some book out ready to take the the local charity shop, I found an old book I bought (I think I found it in a charity shop)

Tart cards

For any new readers (or my loyal readers who may not remember) - Tart cards were often printed cards (though some of the early ones were handwritten/drawn) and placed in London telephone boxes by the working girls advertising their different type of services during the 1980's when a loophole in the law meant they were not, strictly speaking, illegal. The practice of placing cards was known as carding. Sex sells but ironically sex was the one word that was not used on the cards. Hand written, euphemism, double entendres, catch phrases, plain text, rhymes and a specialised vocabulary.

Here's a few you may not have seen.

Of course not everyone appreciated these cards, some found them intimidating and offensive, others amusing but for the girls and their customers they were a commercial necessity and in 2001 it became a criminal office to put these type of tart cards in telephone boxes and if caught could have faced a six-month jail sentence or a £5,000 fine.

Stay safe.

Have a fun weekend.
