He'd only just started when the door bell rang. She breathed relief but he looked out the window.
"It's your mother," he said. "Stay here, we're not done."
"Please Barry, don't let her come upstairs." She felt panic.
He left the bedroom. She heard him open the front door and greet her
mother. Their voices went into the lounge, oh god he was going to make
her a cup of tea. She heard them chatting, it was amiable, normal. She
wanted to join them. Thirty minutes later their voices were in the hall.
"Well thanks for the tea, Barry, and I hope Melanie's migraine gets better soon." The front door closed.
Minutes later Barry re-entered the bedroom.
"I like your mom, she sends her best wishes by the way. If she only knew why her naughty daughter was really upstairs..."

I think that stories with canes are your favorite, Ronnie. I was packing a suitcase for a short trip, and Sam said to be sure to pack the Loopy Johnny. As quiet as a cane at a hotel.
