12 months tomorrow, 23rd March, the UK went into lockdown. We should have been locked down 2 weeks before that, well that's my opinion and I know a lot would agree. I really didn't think 12 months down the line we would still have this pandemic with us and the horrific number of deaths.
UK will be having a day of reflection. A minutes silence will be held at 12 pm, followed by bell ringing. Prominent buildings and landmarks across the UK will be lit up and we have all been encouraged to stand on our doorsteps at 8 pm with phones, candles and torches to signify a ‘beacon of remembrance’.
Our businesses will be opening soon (they need to open) as many
have had to close their shops/pubs/restaurants for good and my heart
goes out to all those who've had their lives disrupted and in some cases
worse. The one business I'm looking forward to opening is my
hairdressers:) can't wait for that. If everything is going well with the
numbers and the vaccine roll out is still strong, they should open 12th
April and I've already asked for an early appointment even a short
notice cancellation.
What's lockdown, opening up, social distancing, impact on the local
community etc like in your corner of the world, I'd love to hear.

I was just saying to Rick yesterday that I couldn't imagine still dealing with lockdowns, distancing etc a year later. We went into full lockdown on 22 March which lasted until early June. Since then we have had a couple of blips and we had a low level of restrictions for a week or so. We really have been so blessed, especially given total deaths due to covid are around 30. Now, the only mandate is masking on public transport. I hope it continues!
I love that you are having a day of reflection and really hope the current trend continues to allow the lifting of restrictions.

we officially went into lockdown on 7 April last year, for a month. And then there was a slow reopening done in phases.
(I actually found a wiki entry for it LOL.)
Currently we're at 30 deaths (our population is about 6 million), and no new community cases, or 1 or 2 at most, with imported cases coming in at between 10-15 per day.
There are fines for not wearing masks, for having more than 8 in a gathering, for sitting too closely together in restaurants etc. And masking up is mandatory EVERYWHERE from the minute you leave your house. (Except while dining.)
I live in a somewhat draconian country. But in this case, it did us all heaps of good.
I hope things continue to get better for you, and in the whole world, for that matter. I'm just extremely grateful to be living where I'm living!
We've taken a step backward as the variants are popping up here. So indoor gatherings are limited to 5 people. Otherwise, most businesses are open, as are schools. Masks are mandatory in any indoor setting, and most cases result from eating in restaurants, so we aren't going out for lunch any time soon.
The good news is, vaccines are now being offered to many more people in lower age groups, so we will be booking this morning!

No one could possibly imagine these lockdowns would still be in effect over a year later. I think we're doing very well on our vaccines, but 'spring break' is going to set us back and the stupid states opening too soon and dropping all mask requirements. We also have so many who won't take the vaccine because of 'political' reasons. Idiots. Oh well, survival of the fittest.

A year ......... how life has changed right?? I remember a year ago - mid March and the schools announcing they would go online after Spring break... we figured how long could it last ?? 2 weeks/a month at most. In June we were talking about September and sending her back to school in October/November depending on numbers. That's where we are now! Talking about sending the lil one back to school in September 2021 IF we both have the vaccinations. le sigh...
We've been closed more than we've been open... most restaurants scrambled to figure out pick up service cause the dining rooms have been closed. even our 5 star restaurants have been offering delivery/pick up. Now our restaurants are open - 4 to a table and the 4 have to live in the same house ! Our gyms are closed (at least I think they're still closed) I cancelled my membership in September.
Our hair dressers open and close so much it's hard to keep track. Last spring I went over 3 months without a hair cut and considering I have an asymmetrical cut (long on one side short on the other) I was so depressed over how ugly it looked. The last reopening I was lucky as I was given priority over others and got one of the first appointments.
We've even adjusted our food/supply shopping. I shop once a week for fresh / perishables - we used to buy the rest in bulk at a big box store BUT we haven't been near it in over a year... and have discovered Amazon carries almost everything we are used to AND they will deliver to our door!!
Now though we are heading towards yet another lock down because of some 'special' folks who believe the rules don't apply to them AND the variants ....... I am hoping against hope by May/June things will have improved enough for the campgrounds to open so we can move to the country... and have a change of scenery.
My Cherokee princess is in EVS at a local hospital so esensal services it was so strange a year ago being one of a few on the street still a year later traffic has not recovered to its formal volume with so many working from home businesses closed
For small businesses it has been devastating. Some areas of the country have locked down more than others and some states have opened sooner than others with terrible results. Our governor didn't make wise decisions -he was a tRumper- so at one point we had the highest numbers in the country. Thankfully, with the arrival and accessibility of the vaccines those numbers have come down. Our schools went back to in person learning last week and we are hopeful.
Sadly, I have said all along that we should have shut our borders, and kept them shut. The Australia approach would have Canada in fine shape right now. All the goods we import could have been on hold for three months, and we could have started using rail/ship as the only way things get into Canada. We are still in sad shape, and will be there for many months. People are only get one shot of the vaccine, and will wait three or four months for the second shot.

Roz - We are not in full lockdown like we were last March. Schools have now gone back and some small essential shops are open (our supermarkets of course have been open right through). Your country has done so well. It lockdown straight away when those little blips started, not like out Government. I read in one of the papers over the weekend, that we could be social distancing and wearing masks for years to come. How true, not sure. Thanks.
Fondles - 30 deaths in a population of 6 million that's very good. I know you said about your country being draconian, but that's has helped keep your numbers down. Have your restaurants been open all the time?

Morningstar - I really didn't think we would still be where we are one year later. It's the variants that they are talking about coming into countries that worries me. Sadly we are all going to have to live with the virus like we do the flu. I don't know how you and other parents have home schooled I would be hopeless at it. I try to only do one shopping a week. Let's hope we can both get a haircut soon:) and I really hope you both get your jabs soon. Are there any in your area getting theirs? Keeping fingers crossed that you can get away to your campsite. SG - Same over hear, so many small businesses have had to close for good and many on the brink of closing. yes devastating for them. I have heard some of your States haven't handled the virus very well. Our businesses will (if numbers are still going down) will open 12th May. Red - I think Australia has done the best job of handling this virus out of all countries. We have one jab and then have to wait 12 weeks before the second. Our jab should be in May. I hope you both gets yours soon.. Thanks.
