P tipped more than the food cost

We had our first meal out, commercially, at a restaurant last week and it was really nice after more than four months. The staff were brilliant and really welcoming and no doubt as pleased to see us (and everyone else) as we were to see them. The gave us a table overlooking the lake, the food was simple but perfect and attention to hygiene impressively thorough.

Now the silly part was that they run an in-house offer on the evening we went, which offers a two-course meal plus bottle of house wine for a silly bargain price. They always used to be full on such evenings prior to lockdown and still were, but with the reduction in table numbers to comply with new guidance there was loads of space and service great. We were happy indeed, then at the end P asked for the bill, P looked twice at it. They were operating Rishi Sunak's (our UK chancellor) offer to supplement the non alcoholic part of restaurant meals up to 50% or £10 per head through August to help encourage people to go out and revitalise the economy. So in addition to the promotional offer we got the government's offer too and the bill was ridiculous.

I think for the first time in his life P tipped more than the food cost and still got fantastic value. Well done them and all other restaurants who are trying to get back to normal, they deserve our support although I think 'normality' might be a long time coming.

Stay safe. Have a good week.

I'm happy to see things are looking up for you and your nation. It's a mess here with the virus and a divided country. Yesterday a local news reporter stopped a lady who wasn't wearing a mask and asked her why she wasn't wearing one. She said the virus was fake news and made up. She didn't see anything different happening around her. They should have taken her straight to the hospital and let her get a good look. Sometimes we wear freedom to loosely... Be well...

Now if you had over-tipped there would have been trouble.
Looks like a nice restaurant.

Hi Ronnie,

How wonderful that you were able to enjoy a restaurant meal again, that's great news. Sounds like a wonderful meal and evening and that the staff deserve kudos. Glad you had such a great experience:)

Here, cases have resurfaced and some restrictions have once again been put in place our largest city being under a higher level of restrictions than the rest of the country as that is where the cases are. Hopefully we will get on top of it quickly.

Hugs
Roz

Dinner at a restaurant ( sighing wistfully)
I'm just not ready for that BUT what a brilliant idea of the government to help with incentives !!!

What a pleasant time you must have had, and such good value. It would be nice to go out again, but dining outdoors is not Ron's thing. (Bugs!)

Hugs,
Hermione

Sounds like a wonderful evening out! And P's tip shows how very classy you all are. All that could have made it better would have been a nice spanking when you got home.

Wonderful you went out for a meal, but we are not ready to sit inside any restaurant. Glad to know P tipped more than usual. with such a fantastic deal, and 10 pounds paid by the government, I think P should have tipped even more, if your finances can afford it. If so, you can mention it to me and earn a spanking.

I do feel for all those mom and pop restaurants and such that have been so affected by Covid 19. I know there are some that will not make it back and it is important to support those that do.

I’m so glad you were able to eat outside safely. Here, we are just all over the place regarding safety. And school stuff is just completely ridiculously dangerous!

1ManView - Things are a little better in the UK. We have local lockdowns if the virus is high in one particular area. Personally, the UK was far too late locking down. I've read some think the whole thing is fake news. Can't believe some people. Thanks.

Michael - Yes there would. It was so nice to go out. Thanks.

Roz - The staff were wonderful and we should support our hospitality industry as many have gone out of business, so sad. Yes I did reAd about different areas having restrictions. I hope they can get on top of it quickly. Thanks.

Morningstar - I wasn't sure how I would feel but I'm glad we went. Thanks.

Hermione - It was lovely just to feel normal (well as normal as we could feel) P's not one for eating outside in the UK in August/September because of wasps wanting to join you eating. Thanks.

PK - I like a spanking before we go out to eat but didn't happen. Thanks.

Red - He tipped very well. Not many restaurants where we live have outside spaces. Thanks.

SG - I totally agree. I feel so bade for those small establishments. Thanks.

Minelle - Our Government want all UK children back in school early September. Not sure how that will work. Thanks.

Love,
Ronnie

Sounds like you had a great evening!

I'm only comfortable eating outside right now, but live in Las Vegas where it's about 43C currently so outside isn't really an option.

Definitely agree with your husband on the tip. I'm sure the staff could really use the tips now. In Vegas there are a lot of local discounts and happy hours, so we always try to tip on what the bill should have cost. Don't want to shortchange people that count on tips, especially since in the US they are usually paid a lot less in jobs that get tips. And in some jobs taxed on what the tips "should" have been.
