I was reading an old article recently about the "King of Saucy Postcards" Donald McGill. Apparently SIXTY of his postcards were due to be sold last year in the biggest auction of its kind in years. I don't know if they all were all sold as I couldn't find a follow up.
The first cards were issued in 1904. Sadly he died in 1962 with only £735 in the bank despite his
illustrations selling 200m copies. His saucy cards were sold in coastal
towns, were hugely popular during the first half of the 20th century.
He was once charged for breaking the Obscene Publications Act of 1857 and fined £50.00 as they found his double entrendes too risque.
I used to love looking at them when we went on UK holidays. Wished I'd kept the ones I had sent to me.
Here's a few for your enjoyment.

I hadn't realised that the Kipling joke was that old, I think the first time I heard it it was being done by Benny Hill who of course was in a direct line of descent from these postcards.
Love these...thanks for sharing. Have a good week...

What funny cards! I have never seen one in real life but of course many on the internet. They must have raised some eyebrows back in the day.
Hugs,

These are great cards, I'd love to see more. Hope you have a great week.
Love the postcards.
We'll miss you. Hope you're doing something fun, although you didn't mention anything. So hoping for best outcomes for whatever.
I always love these. I remember saucy postcards so well and am always tempted to read the modern ones you find in our seaside resorts, but somehow they don't seem to be the same as they were.

Ronnie,
These are a great find! never seen them before, and they really are rather saucy for its time, I would think. But then again, maybe things were never quite as strict as history would like us to believe.
Thanks for sharing the postcards. A good look back on the way things were when it came to that sort of thing.
