It caught my attention, on the weekend,
whilst in a nearby town. I'd never seen it before even though I've visited this town many times. Anyway there it was, the nameplate you see below,
and, me being me, I had images of discipline in my mind as opposed to images of learning, which shows how corrupt my mind must be.

Anyway, I decided it was worth googling later to
find out a bit more about its history. Turned out the famous,
Samuel Johnson,
attended there and was indeed whipped many times and expressed his approval of
it. I also found an old drawing of part of the interior of the school showing
the whipping stool, it isn't dated but I should think must be C18. Amazing what you can find with a bit of help from google, the recipients were mainly male but I also dug up accounts of girls and women, both in educational institutions of the day and in society circles, being chastised corporally. I spent over an hour poring over the wonderful ghastly accounts.
Out this morning - then this evening an early dinner and onto the ballet to see Swan Lake.
Have a good week,
Ronnie
