On the topic of instruments that are either hard to take or actively disliked, may I offer a view on a tawse-like strap which we have in our collection of instruments. It is available from Bondara. The strap is leather with a thin metal sheet sewn inside, which keeps it springy and stiff.

When used for a reward or a good behaviour spanking, I am placed on the bed with my hips raised over pillows and my wife will tan my bare bottom good and hard with this instrument. I love this spanking and could lie there on my front for ages whilst she colours my bottom a deep red.
I moan with pleasure and lift my hips frequently, thus inviting her to carry on spanking.

However it is a different story entirely when this tawse is used for punishment. I am made to stand with my hands on my head and my legs spread apart for balance. My wife takes slow deliberate aim and straps the back of my thighs from each side and then the front of my legs. The pain is entirely different and I feel her anger dissipate through the strokes she places. I have been known to ask her to stop but she doesn't.

So there you are, one spanking toy but two different results.
