The Longest Day

Do not call me hero
When you see the medals that I wear
Medals maketh not the hero,
They just prove that I was there.

Do not call me hero
Now that I am old and grey
I left a lad, returned a man
They stole my youth that day

Do not call me hero
When we ran the wall of hail
The blood, the fears, the cries, the tears
We left them where they fell

Do not call me hero
Each night I stop and pray
For all the friends I knew and lost
I survived my longest day.

Do not call me hero
In the years that pass
For all the real true heroes
Have crosses, lined up on the grass.

Rob Aitchison

Remember them from generation to generation.

Let us not forget.

This is going to be a rough Veterans Day for me considering the election results. The thing I hate more than anything is hypocrisy and to have to watch people feign respect for veterans after having voted against everything they fought for just to be more financially comfortable, is going to challenge every ounce of self-restraint I possess. For me, 2024 will forever be the year of the "bacon patriot".

I hadn't seen that poem before. Very poignant.

I have to agree with KDPierre. It's more important than ever before to recognize the sacrifices our brave military and civilians made so that we could be free. Democracy is in grave peril now.

Hugs,
Hermione

We can never forget the sacrifices the brave men and women in the service. They risk their lives every day to protect our freedom. I agree with KDPierre I pray our republic is strong enough to survive this next 4 years.
