Alison really thought her first day had gone well, after all that
crushing on the tube to get in early and then skipping lunch to overtake
her workload and then, at 5.30pm she was called into Mr Lowther's
office and told she'd got all her figures wrong for the day and it would
throw all the other comptometer operators out and cause them lots of
extra work.
Mr Lowther told her straight she could either leave on the spot or be punished and do her best to make up. Alison chose to be punished and left Mr Lowther's office with a sore bottom and tears in her eyes. It was a very harsh first day but at least she still had her job.

If it had been the cane for me I would have left - now if it involved leather, count me working tomorrow.
Since I don't know what a comptometer is, I would never have been hired in the first place ;D

At a young age when I was just starting out....as much as I might have needed the job...run! Now would look back and say...you should have stayed.

Good question.... Been in a situation where a boss threatened me in front of others, and I stopped my truly terrible behavior immediately. If we were alone and my job depended on it, I may not have stopped...but I also may have run too! (This was before I was married!) Lol

OMG, this is an old Janus story. Thanks for explaining the "comptometer." That dates this as well. Good little trip down memory lane.
