Believe it or not, these were the beds that were used in Brittany in the "old days" (and, yes, they sometimes had two levels - not unlike the sleeping berths on the Orient Express :-)
Such antique pieces of furniture are now often converted in linen or houseware dressers, as people have grown taller... (I own one of them)
This "two-level" version, however, is rather unusual, but might have been found in large families.. Note that the more common, "single level" version was intended to serve a (married) couple. Talk about "sleep tight" !...
