50 Shades of Porn

"Psst! wanna see a really good porn site I found the other night? I'll email you the address."

Now you wouldn't expect to overhear a whisper like that at the school gates where mumsies cluster to pick up their darling offspring, who they would no doubt fight tooth and claw to protect from exposure to such things. And you probably wouldn't hear it.

But, according to Sunday Times columnist India Knight in her prominent piece yesterday, the same mumsies who do the school run and support women's rights and lunch out are, indulging themselves in exactly the same type of pornography peddled on the internet.......except it's wrapped up and packaged differently in 50 Shades of Grey, which has topped the best-sellers list here for the last ten weeks.

India Knight described it as 'Waitrose porn' (Waitrose is a posh UK supermarket for those who don't live here) and her article is insightful and witty, she's neutral on porn but clearly a bit scathing about the hypocrisy of middle England moms who delude themselves into thinking what they're reading is art, or liberating, or really a love story or whatever they tell themselves.

And apparently it's the sado masochism and domination that fires these ladies up. Funny isn't it, women fight for over a century to get equal treatment, then drool over the prospect of being beaten and dominated.

I wonder if the mail order guys have had a surge in orders for S&M related products to the well heeled post codes:)

Can't comment on the book as I haven't read it yet.

The joys of not knowing what is going on behind closed doors.

Most of them haven't really got a clue what the scene is all about anyway and from what i have read they are not going to get it from that book.

Have a good week Ronnie

I have also not read the book but it sure has caused a lot of talk amongst all of us and even the vanillas. I hear it's soft core romance novel type stuff, not near as good as writing from the real BDSM and other kink authors we have out there. I'm not inclined to read it.

Apparently there has been a huge rise in sales of soft rope from DIY stores! Haven't read the book yet and don't expect much from it.

I've been reading an awful lot about it on fb these past few days with much amusement. I quite liked the books but they reminded me a bit of Mills & Boon. All dominant men and swooning 'unable to resist' ladies...... and are just slightly more graphic...

I myself or my other half have not read the book either, even though it seems it is the current rage sweeping the land maybe it is due to our age?. However we have shopped at waitrose so at least we are making progress lol. Have a very good day dear lady.

That's why it is so often referred to as "Mommy porn" in the media. I have started to read it, but haven't found any good bis yet. I suspect it is quite titillating for those who rarely come across anything graphic, but for those of us who regularly read and write spanking blogs, it seems a bit tame and ho hum.

Hermione

my wife has read it, or tried to! It is extremely badly written, an office romance of the worst Mills&Boon kind, with an unbelievable vacuous heroine and a lantern jawed hero with shed loads of money.
Consumer porn.

Hi,
I enjoyed them, and think it is good to read because it is obviously striking a cord for women.I do not think it is GREAT literature but that is not why women are reading the books. It's a romance with porn and and a bit of the other "stuff.I sometimes impulsively start asking whats the big deal,(at parties etc) and do I get some looks!! Sometimes I say tooo much especially after a cocktail or two. I even had a VERY vanilla relative say "everyone needs a good smack now and then." HUH??? This was after I accidentally brushed her bum passing her. Maybe we can actually start accepting people who have less mainstream desires without worrying about the PC aspect? So if the books ignite conversation and a more open minded attitude toward the lifestyle I think that is great! Sorry for going on and on....

That book is all the rage here too. I have not read it, probably won't either. It's a trilogy, I can't make that much of a commitment. :D

As for women's rights/equal rights, I am a feminist and a woman that must be "taken in hand" by a self-assured male. I am a complex woman and one facet of me doesn't cancel out the other. Feminism (as political, social, economic ideals) and Dominance/submission are not mutually exclusive.

We all know by now that the men and women screaming loudest against anything to do with sexuality are usually the biggest perverts...LOL.

(Must think of another word for those folks, cuz I'm a perv and proud of it *big grin*)

P.S. Good post

You know I really enjoyed this books. Not great literature (you'll usually find just better writing on Fantasy Friday) but a very enjoyable read. People have a hard time realizing that woman DO know what they want. We want equality and as we feel we are receiving it from our men then we are free to enjoy other aspects of our relationship. Read then for the fun of it - not to learn about any lifestyle.

PK

Ronnie,

I hope it stimulates some couples to talk about a more spicy sex life.

I am smiling while I write this thinking of the moms at the Waitrose check out counter in Kensington hiding their copy with the produce.

Great post.

I have read the books and I do agree, the writing is somewhat poor. But I did enjoy them, I just think there wasn't enough spanking in them!
I feel the main female character could have used quite a bit more!
:)

My Husband is currently reading them just to see what the big fuss is all about. I'm very curious to see his reactions.
It's odd to live in a DD and or mild D/s relationship and read what mainstream has gathered from it.
I think the writer spent a lot of time online trying to get a feel for what it's all about.
Maybe she even craves the lifestyle herself?
I'd love to know more as to why she wrote them, and if it's her personal fantasy.

Bob - I will get around to browsing though it though I doubt I'll actually read it all. Have a good week yourself. Thanks Bob.

Lea - Apparently the writing is bad. As you say there are excellent bloggers out there and I'd much prefer to read them than the book. Thanks Lea.

Darkdruid - Welcome. So I take it there is bondage in the book. Will you read it? Thanks DD.

Dee - I remember the Mills and Boon books but never actually read any. It's all the talk in the ladies room in our building. Thanks Dee.

CM - I wonder if this book had been written by a man for men, would have been derided and dismissed as anti-female, sexist smut or even pornography? Thanks and have a good week yourself.

Hermione - Yes "Mommy porn" You will have to let us know what you thought of the book. Thanks Hermione.

RM - Hello to you. I can't believe that over 250,000 copies have been sold this past week. Thanks RM.

Minelle - Don't apologise. I like to read what people think. I have to agree with you - if it gets people talking about the lifestyle can't be a bad thing at all. Thanks Minelle. Loved your FF story.

Hedone - I'll probably take a flick through the book when on holiday but not sure If I'll read it.Don't like the word pervert, so what's another word. "Sexual Devian"? Thanks Hedone.

PK - Hey PK.Good point. Great to see you back. Thanks PK.

Joey - I was coming out of Tesco's today and two young girls were both carrying the book. It's getting us girls talking. I know some of the women in our building have read it when asked if they have talked talked to their husbands/boyfriends the answer is "gosh no, couldn't talk to him about that sort of thing." Shame. Thanks Joey.

Ronnie

Emi - Sorry missed you there. As I said haven't read the book so can't comment on it. I haven't heard of any men reading it so would be interested to hear your husbands views on it. I think I read somewhere that she based the two characters on Bella and Edwards from Twilight. Thanks Emi.

It's a novel. It's a fun read. I think we have all put ourselves into a similar story at some point in our lives and loved every minute of it.
I agree with someone's comment about
protesting too much.

"Funny isn't it, women fight for over a century to get equal treatment, then drool over the prospect of being beaten and dominated."

Are you meaning to suggest that there is something unequal or less than equal about being submissive?

Yep, the New York Times reviewed the books as "mommy Porn". I have read them. They're...ok. The writer clearly does NOT live within a D/s relationship, and while the writing in the 1st book is adequate, the 2nd and 3rd are rather poor. BUT...it is interesting that it's still on the best seller list, isn't it? Sara

I'm flagging half way through number three.Mainly because the 'reason' behind the man's power struggle is cited to be an abusive childhood.Save the first for a nice easy beach read and see how you go.I'll be watching the shoppers at Booths to see if there are similar Northern traits ! Sarah,LD,UK

ronnie said...

David - Nothing of the sort. To me that's how the article came across. Thanks David.

MrJ - Thanks Mr. J.

Sara - Can't believe it's sold 250,000 sold in the UK this past week. I will have to make time to flick through. Thanks Sara.

Sarah - You got to number 3:) Yep did buy it for my summer beach/pool read and will definitely start it and see how I go. Thanks Sarah.

I realy can not answer your question in truth that being if the trilogy had been written by a man for men would it have been dismissed or branded in some way. I imagine though wether it be written by either of the sexes for all sexes it may well of caused a stir and been received in a similar manner. What i can say however is you responded to someone higher in the thread saying you do not like the word Perv actualy neither do i myself seeing myself as being perfectly normal well most individuals find me to be so LOL . And if a little perv or sexual deviation was never included in the mating game, then most or all offspring would have been conceived in the missionary position only: and being the very proud father of 3 now grand adult offspring am very pleased we included some spicy deviation during our intimate encounters; for there is nothing like a little bit of adventure so they say I hope my reply makes at least a little sense. Off out now to tackle the daily duties that never seem to end, have a very enjoyable day yourself

CM - Yes makes perfect sense. Some spicy deviation is necessary to keep everything alive and fresh. Were still trying new things and enjoying doing so. Thanks CM.

Ronnie; I have seen both in our local Costco, where they are very inexpensive, but reading a few pages leaves a lot to be desired in literary skill. Much beter reading your blog, as things are constantly improving at home, so I can delve into older osts that I missed
