More Sex Please

"Admit it, you’re only half the sexpot you claim to be"

A new study has found Americans exaggerate how much sex they have, according to yesterdays Sunday Times. Journalist Tim Rayment publishes statistics from some authoritative reports including Google's former quantitative analyst Seth Stevens-Davidowitz, Durex and the Lancet medical journal which conducted a 10-years study ending in November 2013.

The ex Google guy's conclusion? “Taken altogether” — and he examines more statistics than we repeat here — “the data suggest that Americans manage to have sex about 30 times a year, or once every 12 days.”

What about us Brits? - The most authoritative British study is the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, conducted over a decade and published in The Lancet in November 2013....In it, people aged from 16 to 44 claimed to have sex just under five times a month, a decline of a fifth in frequency compared with 10 years earlier. The journalist concludes his article with a tongue-in-cheek, after weighing up all the analysis, "I say this with confidence. You are having sex 2.8 times a month."

I (me Ronnie) am not saying all or any of the information contained in the article is true because a lot of it relies on what people say in surveys but it can't all be untrue either because certain hard facts, like sales statistics from Durex, lend some support.

But what I will say is, if the stats in the article are even approximately near the truth, I must be a very lucky girl because I am definitely getting more than my fair share and I should never harass my husband again. I hid that section of the Sunday Times of course, no point having him read stuff like that:)

But what about you? Does anyone find those figures a bit low?

Have a good week.

Hi Ronnie, those stats do seem so, sad if there is any accuracy to them lol. One instance it's definitely good to be above average! LoL

One should, of course, never generalize one´s own experiences, but I am indeed surprised and wondering exactly WHAT people are hiding.

Hi Ronnie, we don't have much fun over here do we? lol Shall we move to Corbin's Bend? Bloddy newspapers, they didn't come and ask us

I never heard those facts and I'm glad I haven't (until today). I'm very very lucky as we have sex twice a week and when I'm really lucky three times.

According to my vanilla friends I think the estimate is high. They talk about sex being a bother and a nuisance. They talk unkindly about their husbands - it's really awful. I still wish they would study spankos in particularly. I'd say we do much better.

I wonder what the numbers are for Canadians. It's too cold for it in the winter, too hot in summer, but just right in spring and fall, so maybe our numbers vary according to the seasons.

Well, with my ex, i would say the is accurate, if not over the average. Since Master a much different story....supporting PK's comment.

I blogged on these stats and suggested kinky people may be above average. But they are depressing.

Unfortunately, I must agree based on what I hear and live.

Roz - If yu read another survey I bet stats would be different I'm sure.

MrJ - I wonder. Thank you.

Jan - Corbin's bend, yes please:) Thanks.

Archedone - You are a lucky guy. Thank you.

PK - That would be an interesting to read. Thanks.

Hermione - The surveys I've seen always seem to be UK and US. Don't know why. Thanks.

Abby - I don;t think we can always believe surveys. People don't tell the truth especially if they are with someone else when asked. Thank you.

FD - Have to do the same. Thank you.

SG - Read a another survey and figures will be different. Thanks.

Unfortunately I must agree with PK and Abby that the numbers seem high from what I hear here in the US. One variant not distinguished here is sadly marriage. It seems that those who have been married longer seem to have sex less often than those who are single or recently married.

Hi Ronnie, it seems that they have excluded most who do ttwd and the result really looks a bit sad, doesn't it?

It seems there are many who should have more sex, hopefully as part of a lovely relationship, if not, at least for the fun of it!

R and I have sex at least once a week and typically is after she has given me a spanking and is amazing. Spanking seems to get us both in the mood with great results. Maybe people should get into spanking to get the juices going and have more sex. But that is us. I have no idea what others do and don't care.

I have to say, I too hear women talking about sex as a nuisance, and many of the comments I overhear from men sound rote, like they are saying what is expected for a man. I know that life can get too crazy busy and tension, exhaustion all play a role. To me, sex is the glue and long term relationships thrive better with more, than less.

I think it must depend on circumstances. However I think we are above average.

I think PK's take is so right. I get so saddened by the male/female wars and sloppy suppositions made about gender difference. One of my favourite quotes on the wall of a friend is "Men are from Earth, women are from Earth, get over it!!"
TTWD is such a good way of breaking down assumptions. What I love about the Ds blogs I read is that everyone here doesn't settle for what The Times article seems to imply. It's like we have a secret passageway to intimacy through embracing our desires. Turbo-charged love....:)

Thanks for a thought-provoking post Ronnie...

Enzo - Yes I agree with you on that. Thank you.

Nina - Women should play a more active part. Thanks.

Baxter - I agree everyone should get into spanking - it would certainly help some marriages:) Thanks.

Saoirse - Yes, hearing some of my colleagues talk about their husband doesn't make pleasant listening. Thank you.

Minelle - I would say we are. Thanks.

Blackbird - You are welcome. One of my friends says she doesn't get enough and oh how I would love to tell her about spanking. I tell her to take the initiative but she says no, that's his job:( Thanks.

Quite a few of my friends know about spanking in my life. I was cavalier about "playing" in the past :) And none of them were horrified. The mildest reaction was intrigue and an "oh, yes, we are into rubber but we don't get around to it" - from my massage therapist who saw too many marks... And the best? "Don't mention it to my husband. He'd like the idea too much!"
Hee, hee....

Hi Ronnie,
I expect most people may lie about having more sex than they do, but few will lie about having less sex. I have found these numbers to be true and disappointing.

ronnie said...

Blackbird - I love what your therapist said. Thanks.

Anonymous - Disappointing yes and true about what people say regarding how many times they have sex.

Hi Ronnie, :) Sad all those numbers. I am not surprised really...

Can't look back, can only look here and forward! Hurray for ttwd- I'd say well above those numbers. Lucky us all!! Many hugs,

Hi Ronnie

I have seen similar statistics and thought that it was sad. Spanking, D/s and FLR all seem to generate positive relationships resulting in more sex and healthier relationships. We generally average better than once per week, probably closer to twice. If you then look at both length of relationship (we have been married 25 years) and age (50 plus) we are so much over the average. I joke that at present we are apparently in the top 10% and if we keep this up for the next decade we will reach the top 1%. Something to aim for. DtBHC.
